L’AUTOGRAPHE LTD ANNOUNCES MAJOR AUCTION OF AUTOGRAPHS, HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPTS, AND RARE BOOKS

L’Autographe LTD will hold a major auction of autographs, historical manuscripts, and rare books at its London headquarters. The sale will feature over 450 autograph letters, books, and documents from important private collections, offering a broad panorama of European and American political, artistic, and cultural history.

Of particular note is a significant collection of letters, documents, and photographs of Swiss personalities — the most important to appear on the market in recent years. This remarkable ensemble, representing the final 100 lots in the catalogue, is located in Switzerland and will be shipped directly from there. All shipments will be handled in full compliance with Swiss export regulations and international customs requirements applicable to the destination country.

Among the highlights are documents and photographs signed by Napoleon I, Eisenhower, Gandhi, and Hitler, as well as autographs by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Ferruccio Busoni, revealing previously unpublished insights into their artistic and musical careers.

A particularly fascinating section is dedicated to the Catholic Church, including letters and photographs signed by Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, alongside over one hundred other items from cardinals and prominent church figures around the world — many considered papabili in their time.

A large section is also devoted to the visual arts, with letters and writings by Eugène Delacroix, Auguste Rodin, René Magritte, and Pablo Picasso, key figures of 19th- and 20th-century European art. Collectors will also find exceptionally rare items such as an autograph signature of William Hooper, one of the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence, a rare letter from Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, and a letter by Charles Babbage, the father of the computer.

Complementing the autograph section, the auction will also present an exceptional selection of rare books, manuscripts, and early printed editions, including a very rare first edition of Euclides Elementa geometriae (Venice, 1509), edited and translated by Luca Pacioli at the request of his close friend Leonardo da Vinci, a landmark of Renaissance mathematical thought, and the first edition of Johannes Kepler’s Dioptrice (1611), one of the foundational works in the history of optics and modern astronomy.
